The late 2010s era of Air Max was one for the history books. Nike successfully launched two newly-engineered cushioning units via the Air Max 270 and Air Vapormax, both of which spawned independent categories that pushed the popularity of gas-filled bags into the 2020s. It’s fair to say Nike still holds that time in high regard, because the brand is coming out with a new Air Max model that looks eerily familiar.
Shown here for the first time via official images, the Nike Air Max Phoenix puts a fresh spin on the 270’s distinguishable aesthetic. A 270-degree Air unit lives at the heel, and the upper features a pin-dot pattern that gradually transitions to align with the rear tooling. The Air Max 270 became extraordinarily popular upon debuting in 2018 and still has a place in the Nike catalog today, but it’s nowhere near as ubiquitous as it once was. Might the Air Max Phoenix help Nike recapture the same sort of lightning in a bottle? Time will tell, but there’s certainly a good amount of potential here.
A total of four Air Max Phoenix colorways have been uncovered as of this writing, two of which already have release dates. Expect “White/Royal” and “Triple Black” colorways to release July 3rd, followed by black/blue and orange options later on. The Air Max Phoenix retails for $155, which is $15 less than the 270 (in 2025) but not necessarily budget-friendly. If you’re out for something a little easier on the wallet, the Nike V5 RNR delivers comfort and style for just $90.
