“Mamba out” was the pithy phrase Kobe Bryant threw up at the end of his road in the NBA. In that final game of pro action, the legend went out as only he could: playing all but 6 minutes and shooting 50 times from the field to the tune of 60 points. The tires that brought him to the finish line were the Nike Kobe 11 “Fade to Black,” the final colorway in a series-wide celebration of his footwear under the Swoosh, the visually darkest edition and a culmination on what started with the Nike Zoom Huarache 2k4 in “Triple White.”
Now, on the ten year anniversary of the Black Mamba’s very last chapter, the Nike Kobe 11 joins the Protro lineage. It’s the second silhouette under his name to receive that treatment in under a year’s time, following a red carpet treatment for the Kobe 3 that’s included a new low-cut build. As with any Protro proposition, Nike designers and engineers have modernized the tech within the Kobe 11, this despite it being the most modern model to enter the series. Though Flyknit remains in place as the foremost material in the upper, a ReactX drop-in midsole replaces Lunarlon, joining the heel Zoom Air unit for propulsion. Also as many of its peers have also done, the Kobe 11 reformats its tread pattern for increased court feel and traction.
