Jordan Brand is cooking up a special lineup of colorways for their Air Jordan 40, celebrating past models from the last forty years of sneakers. The Air Jordan 16 is among them, bringing its OG “Midnight Navy” style to the AJ40.
The last two-plus decades of Air Jordan releases have been interesting, to say the least. With Michael Jordan retiring after the AJ14’s release, the design behind each yearly model got more and more conceptual. The AJ15 was outright hated by fans, while the 16 & 17 have both become cult classics. The 20s were on and off for success, and with the 31, Jordan Brand tried to recapture the love of the early models by modernizing them for the mid 2010s market. Now, with the Air Jordan 40, the brand is once again trying to recapture the love of past release, but this time, they’re doing it remarkably well.
Our first look at a mashup colorway for the Air Jordan 40 was earlier this season, with the AJ1 “Chicago” theme. The added Swoosh was an interesting twist, but didn’t totally capture our attention like the two pairs that have surfaced today. First was an homage to the AJ23 in “Black Stealth“, which fairly accurately recreates that 17-year-old shoe. Now, the AJ16 is getting the same treatment with it “Midnight Navy” color scheme. The AJ40 takes on the palette with glossy patent leather sections, navy blue hits, and of course, the removable shroud piece secured by a series of metal snaps.

The latest Air Jordan 40 colorway to celebrate a past silhouette has not been announced for release yet, but will likely arrive during the 2025-26 NBA season. Paying homage to the AJ16, one of the most unusual Jordan models, the current-gen model adopts the OG “Midnight Navy” colorway, complete with the removable shroud. Pairs will likely release from both Nike and Jordan retailers, with a $205 price tag.
