The Air Jordan 1 Low “Banned” Releases Summer 2026

After a somewhat lackluster year celebrating the Air Jordan 1’s 40th anniversary, Nike still has some special plans for the shoe in 2026. This week, we have our first look at the newest release in the “Banned” series, bringing the commemorative look to the AJ1 Low.

The 2016 Air Jordan 1 “Banned” brought back one of the most iconic colorways in sneaker history, reviving the rebellious spirit of the original 1985 release. The shoe’s iconic black-and-red palette is forever tied to the NBA’s uniform rules controversy, with Nike famously paying the fines for Michael to wear red and black shoes on court instead of mostly white sneakers. The 2016 release marked the sixth retro release of the legendary style, and delivered new details like red Xs across the heels and insoles, as well as a return to higher end leather in AJ1s.

Next year, Jordan Brand is planning a return for the “Banned” theme, ten years after its debut in 2016. However, this pair will be a little different, opting for the Air Jordan 1’s low-top version instead of the original high. Seen for the first time this week, the new look dresses the shoe in the classic Bred color blocking, meaning a black base with red overlays and a red toe box. The painted red Xs return on both heels, as well as the insoles. The sockliners also have a quote from Nike’s personal history of the shoe, reading: “On September 15th, 1984, Nike created a revolutionary new basketball shoe.”
